Health Insurance Notice for Newly Registered International Students

13 Ekim 2026

Dear International Student,

Welcome to the IŞIK Community!

If you are newly registered at our university, please carefully read the information below regarding General Health Insurance (GSS) provided by the Turkish Social Security Institution (SGK – Sosyal Güvenlik Kurumu).

1. Is GSS Mandatory?

Enrollment in GSS is not mandatory for international students. If you already have a valid health insurance policy in Türkiye that meets residence permit requirements, you may continue using it.

However, if you wish to benefit from General Health Insurance (GSS) provided by SGK:

  • You must apply within three (3) months from the date of your initial university registration.

⚠️ IMPORTANT: Do Not Miss the 3-Month Deadline!

The 3-month application period is strict. If you fail to apply within three months of your initial registration date, you will lose the right to enroll in GSS under the international student status for the entire duration of your studies. We strongly advise you to complete your application as early as possible.

2. What About Private Health Insurance?

If you choose or already hold Private Health Insurance, please review the scope, limitations, exclusions, and conditions of your policy carefully:

  • Coverage Limits: Private insurance may not cover all healthcare expenses, medical procedures, treatments, or medications.
  • Student Responsibility: Do not assume all medical costs are covered. Verify your policy details directly with your insurance provider.
  • Residence Permit Requirement: You are responsible for maintaining valid health insurance throughout your stay in Türkiye to fulfill legal residence permit conditions.

3. When & How to Apply for GSS?

Application Timeline

The 3-month window starts on your official university registration date.

  • Example:
    • University Registration Date: September 15, 2026
    • Latest GSS Application Deadline: December 15, 2026

Where to Apply

  1. In-Person: Apply at the local Social Security Provincial Directorate (SGK İl Müdürlüğü) or Social Security Center (SGK Sosyal Güvenlik Merkezi).
  2. Online: You may also use the e-Government (e-Devlet) portal for application and tracking where available.

4. Residence Permit & Insurance Validity

International students are legally required to maintain uninterrupted, valid health insurance for the duration of their studies.

If your insurance policy expires:

  • Renew it promptly to ensure continuous coverage.
  • Submit the updated policy documentation to the Directorate of Migration Management (Göç İdaresi Başkanlığı).
