How Does Disinformation Trigger Our Emotions?
Prof. Dr. Rabia Karakaya Polat, a faculty member in the Department of International Relations within the Faculty of Economics, Administrative and Social Sciences and a researcher at the Emotics Lab: Emotions and Politics Laboratory, appeared as a guest on the CNN Türk program Ambassadors of Truth. As part of the research conducted by the Emotics Lab, the effects of disinformation on individuals’ feelings of fear, anger, anxiety, and trust were examined. The study explored how social media content accelerates the spread of misinformation by triggering emotions, how conspiracy theories gain influence through feelings of identity and belonging, and how individuals’ attitudes toward accurate information are shaped by psychological dynamics. The program also emphasized that experience-based communication and concrete narratives can produce more effective outcomes in combating disinformation.
