Our Alumna Şima Açan Makes Türkiye Proud by Upholding Atatürk’s Legacy

“The Pride of Being an IŞIK Member Transcends Borders!”

We are honored to share the historic achievement of our esteemed alumna, Şima Açan, a 1997 graduate of Işık High School and a 2003 graduate of our University’s Department of Electronic Engineering.

Elected as a Member of Parliament for the Oakville West region, Açan has become the first MP of Turkish origin in the Canadian Parliament. Since beginning her tenure in 2025, she has distinguished herself through both her professional expertise and her commitment to her values.

According to recent press reports, Açan continues to uphold her unwavering dedication to Atatürk’s principles and reforms in Canada. Demonstrating her role as a champion of truth, she recently intervened in a high school event where our Great Leader, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, was being misrepresented. Her initiative resulted in a formal apology from the school administration.

We take immense pride in our graduate, who carries our Republican values into the global political arena and aspires to serve as Canada’s Minister of Technology in the future. We wish her continued and lasting success.
