Telecommunication and Microwave Lab.

Telecommunication and Microwave Lab.

Concepts involving the design and implementation of telecommunication systems are introduced in this laboratory. The laboratory is equipped to conduct experiments about analog and digital communication systems and protocols, basic to advanced modulation and channel/source coding schemes. In addition, with the aid of the specialized microwave communication systems and antennas test/measurement equipment, various applications involving high frequency circuit components and systems can be performed in this laboratory.

Communication Systems Test and Measurement

The laboratory is equipped with Telecommunications Instructional Modeling System TIMS which, can achieve the simulation and analysis of nearly all communication systems. Over 100 documented experiments in Telecommunications and Signal Processing can be built on TIMS. This covers virtually all current subject areas and can easily be extended to incorporate new topics as they arise.

Some of the experiments conducted in the laboratory are as follows:

    Analog communication systems:
    • Amplitude modulation (AM),
    • Double sideband modulation (DSB),
    • Single sideband modulation (SSB),
    • Frequency / phase modulation (FM/PM).
    Digital communication systems:
    • Amplitude shift keying (ASK),
    • Phase shift keying (PSK),
    • Frequency shift keying (FSK)

Digital communication system simulation (transmitter-receiver-channel), simulations of communication systems using MATLAB. In addition, a number of MATLAB PCs are always ready in order to compare the hardware simulation with computer simulations and analyze the results.

Microwave Systems Test and Measurement

In order to conduct Microwave band eperiments, the Lab-Volt Microwave Technology Training System (8090), which is a completely integrated package providing students with hands-on experimentation in the principles and practices of microwave technology, is available.

The topics that are covered using this equipment are:

  • Familiarization with Microwave Equipment
  • Power Measurements
  • The Gunn Oscillator
  • Calibration of the Variable Attenuator
  • Detection of Microwave Signals
  • Attenuation Measurements
  • Standing Waves
  • The Directional Coupler
  • Reflection Coefficient Measurement
  • SWR Measurements
  • Impedance Measurements
  • Reactive Impedances
  • Impedance Matching
  • Antennas and Propagation
  • Microwave Optics

On the other hand, computer aided design and simulation tools for microwave circuits are also available in the Lab. environment.
