Işık University Library Adds a New Floor and 1000 M2Back
Işık University's Şile Campus Library, one of only five universities in Turkey Offering 24/7 service, has expanded to two floors.
The opening ceremony for the expansion was held on Thursday 14 March, 2013. Dignitaries in attendance included Feyziye Schools Foundation (FSF) Işık University Board of Trustees Chairman, Prof. Dr. Sıddık B. Yarman, FSF Board Member and Işık University Board of Trustees Vice Chairman, Architect M. Kamil ÖZKARTAL, Işık University Board of Trustees Vice Chairman, Barrister Hüsnü GÜRELİ, Işık University Rector, Prof. Dr. Nafiye Güneç KIYAK, Işık University Board of Trustees Member, Prof. Dr. Gökhan Antalya, Feyziye Schools Foundation Board Member and Işık University Board of Trustees Member, Medical Surgeon Dr. Said AKÇURA, Feyziye Schools Foundation Board of Directors Secretary-General Ahmet Burak. A large contingent of academic and administrative staff, as well as students were also in attendance.
Işık University Library contains more than 128,000 books, including 98,000 electronic books in Turkish and multiple foreign languages. In addition, there are also more than 3,000 DVD, Blue Ray movies/documentaries, slides, audio cassettes, and CD-ROMs. Işık University students and staff also have access to 26,000 e-journal subscriptions, 195 printed journals, 60 high-quality-content on-line databases, as well as 10 daily newspapers, including two in English. The newly opened space on the 4th floor of the University's DK Building, has soundproof group study rooms, presentation rooms, and a state-of-the-art multimedia room with 3D technology. The addition enables the library to create an optimal study environment for up to 400 people at the same time.
The library offers students and staff a chance to challenge their intellects through chess, jenga, mangala, scrabble, checkers, or dominoes in a specially-designed "mind games" room.
Metin Erksan, one of Turkish cinema's most well-known directors, graciously donated his own 10,000 volume collection of books, which is now housed in a special archival section of the library.
Students can take advantage of a spacious working environment provided by Şile's green and blue hues, with a unique view of the forest and the Black Sea. Students and their friends can also utilize the multimedia room to view films from the library's expansive movie collection.
