UNDERGRADUATE ADMISSION


Admission to Işık University undergraduate programs is limited to students who ha
ve successfully competed for a position at the school in the central examination of the OSYM. Students placed by the OSYM, after the completion of the pre-registration process, have to take a two stage English Placement Exam. At the end of this exam, those who have proven their English proficiency are admitted and registered into the Freshman Class for their first year of their undergraduate programs. Students who do not meet the language requirement are registered then placed in the English Preparatory Program. A student may be exempted from the Prep Program without taking the Proficiency Test only if a student:

  • Has taken an official TOEFL test within the past year, and  has received a score of 213  or higher, and a TOEFL Writing Test score of 4.5 or higher;

  • Has taken an official IELTS test and received a score of 7.0 or higher.

Students who have passed either of these tests may pass directly into the Freshman Year.

Students of the Faculty of Fine Arts are admitted through the Aptitude Test administered locally by the Faculty itself and  do not take the English proficiency exam as the instruction in Fine Arts is conducted in Turkish.
 

TRANSFER STUDENTS

External transfers to the Faculties of Işık University are administered in accordance with the principles of “The Regulation of Undergraduate and Vocational School Transfers between Higher Education Institutes” determined by national regulation. Students who have completed at least two semesters in their degree program (apart from the preparatory program), passed all the courses, and achieved at least an average 60% in the courses attended can apply for a transfer to Işık University. Students who wish to transfer are required to certify their competency in English The Executive Boards of the relevant Faculties determine the quotas of transfers and execute the acceptance and admission  procedures.
 

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

 

International applicants seeking admission to Işık University must take Foreign Students' Entrance Examination (YÖS) in English or Turkish, which is administered by OSYM.

The examination score, the candidate’s order of preferences, requirements of the specific programs and the availability of places are taken into consideration by OSYM in the placement of candidates in undergraduate programs. All international students must show a passport with a valid student visa. Student visas can be obtained  from the representative authorities of the Turkish Republic abroad. YÖS examinations are held in Ankara as well as in many other cities. More information and an application form may be obtained from: http://www.osym.gov.tr  .
 

SPECIAL STUDENTS

Işık University accepts special students who have interest in attending some of the undergraduate courses without the intention of getting a degree. Special students may apply to attend courses offered during a semester. Applications are reviewed and approved by the Faculty Executive Board. The tuition fee is determined annually by the Board of Trustees. Special students abide by all the rules and regulations of Işık University. Upon request special students are given documents indicating the courses they have attended and the grades received.

GRADUATE ADMISSION

Applications for graduate study can be submitted twice a year to the Registrar’s Office for programs beginning in the fall and spring semesters.  Calls for application and application deadlines are announced before the beginning of each semester.

Candidates for graduate degree programs must have completed an undergraduate degree or be registered as a fourth year student in a recognized institution of higher learning. Students who do not yet have an undergraduate diploma may be accepted conditionally to a graduate program (The student’s official acceptance to a graduate program is contingent on the submission of a graduation document or diploma and original transcripts to the Registrar’s Office by the application deadline). Applicants to doctoral programs must have a graduate or undergraduate diploma. Undergraduate degree holders applying for doctoral programs must have a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.25/4.00.

Students applying to graduate programs must demonstrate proficiency in English. The minimum acceptable scores for English proficiency are: 70 for ÜDS, 550 for TOEFL (old) 213 for TOEFL (new), 7.0 for IELTS (all parts). Students without these proficiency documents must successfully pass the Işık University English Proficiency Exam.

Applicants to graduate programs must score a minimum of 45 standard points on the Graduate Education Entrance Examination (LES, Lisansüstü Eğitime Giriş Sınavı) administered by the Student Selection and Placement Center (OSYM), or 450 on the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), or 610 on the quantitative Graduate Record Examination (GRE). 

Admission to the Academic Preparatory Program

Students who have degrees in an area of study different from the graduate area to which they are applying can enroll in the Academic Preparatory Program. The required courses in the Academic Preparatory Program cannot replace any of the courses of the graduate program involved. Students spend a maximum of one calendar year in the Academic Preparatory Program.

Continuation of graduate studies after completion of the Academic Preparatory Program is contingent on a minimum GPA of 2.50/4.00.

Admission of Special Students

Graduates or students of an institution of higher education who wish to expand their knowledge of a given subject can, with the approval of the relevant department, be admitted as special students. Special students do not enjoy the rights and privileges granted to regular students.

Like regular students, special students are required to demonstrate English language proficiency but are not permitted to register in thesis classes.  Of the courses taken by special students, a maximum of two may be transferred with credits if the students are accepted as regular graduate students.

Transfer Students

A student who has successfully completed at least one semester in any graduate program at Işık University or at another institution of higher learning may be admitted as a transfer student. Transfer students must demonstrate proficiency in English.

Transfer students must bring at least six credits from the institution where they started and must have a GPA of 3.0/4.00. Transferred credits, however, may not exceed half of the total credits of a graduate program in Işık University.
